Here Paul challenges the thinking of the Philippian believers, but what becomes clear is that what Paul is aiming for is the transformation of their behaviour, specifically how they relate to one another. Before he is our example, Christ is our saviour, but here we see that he is indeed both. As those who are saved through his humble, sacrificial death in our place, we are to humbly and sacrificially love one another. Here is a word that reminds us that a life of discipleship is necessarily lived in community and is a life of being conformed into the image of Jesus.
