Here we come to the first parable proper recorded by Matthew in his gospel. It comes near the mid-point of the gospel story as Jesus people are finding themselves faced with a question — What will I do with Jesus? That is what this parable is ultimately all about — one’s response to Jesus and his proclamation of the in-breaking kingdom of God.
