1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5

Paul continues to address the schisms that are dividing the church at Corinth by challenging the thinking that lay behind the divisions. What the Corinthians were feeling and seeking to move away from was the scandal of Christ's crucifixion. They were seeking to dress their faith up as "wisdom" their culture would esteem. But Paul will have none of it. With great passion he contends that the cross is, in the eyes of humanity, foolish and weak, and yet at the same time, the power and wisdom of God for salvation. The cross of Christ is the center of Christian faith and the only source of genuine hope.
