1 Corinthians 3:1-23

In this text Paul continues to address the issue of quarrelling and divisions within the Corinthian church. As we unpack his argument within its first century context, what will become clear is that the church has often misunderstood and misused this passage. Far from validating any notion that one can be a "carnal" or "worldly" Christian, Paul emphasizes the utter incongruence of the present bickering behaviour of the Corinthians as people of the Spirit. His aim is to correct their behaviour by helping them to understand the nature of the Christian life, the nature of Christian leadership and the nature of the church itself.
